History[]

Yassa Povey is a character from the 2000 AD strips The Dead Man and Judge Dredd. He was a young boy who lived with his family in a settlement called Bubbletown in the desolate radiation-blasted waste land known as the Cursed Earth. When he was out hunting for food with his friends Fuzzy Greel and Dog (a sentient dog), he found a hideously burnt man who was close to death. Yassa's mother, Eartha, persuaded the citizens of Bubbletown that the mysterious man should be brought back to the village.

Eartha nursed the stranger (whom Yassa persisted in thinking of as 'the dead man' because "by rights he really shoulda been dead") back to health. After taking in the Dead Man, who remembered nothing about his identity or his past, the village was plagued by awful nightmares featuring a creature of unspeakable evil and terror. One night the fear was so intense that an elderly man, Abe Skunkstink, died from it. The Dead Man, faced by an increasingly hostile population, decided to leave because it seemed to be him that the malevolent entity was chasing. Although he too had suffered from the nightmares, Yassa accompanied the Dead Man without his parents' permission, because he thought that it would be an adventure.

The pair retraced the route the Dead Man had taken before Yassa found him, with the help of the highly intelligent Dog. Having fought off mutant cannibals known as 'grunts', confronted the diabolical apparition again and crossed a river of acid they reached an abandoned town called Crowley. There the Dead Man finally remembered who he was: Judge Dredd, the most famous lawman in Mega-City One. The injuries that had made his skin "all cracked and baked like a bad stretch of Cursed Earth" had been sustained by falling in the acid river after battling the Sisters of Death, the source of Yassa's nightmares.

When Dredd had his epiphany the Sisters of Death materialised and put out Yassa's eyes. The boy blacked out and Dredd used his strength of will to banish the Sisters, who were as yet only psychic projections without the power to affect the physical plane unless their victim believed in their presence. Yassa was unconscious for four days. When he awoke Dredd had returned him to his parents and set off for Mega-City One, knowing that it was in danger from the Sisters of Death and their allies/creations, the Dark Judges. Yassa was left blinded, having nightmares every time he slept and living with a constant physical memory of the Sisters' presence.

As Dredd had suspected, the Dark Judges attacked Mega-City One — an incident that came to be known as Necropolis. When it was over Dredd sent Cadet Giant in an H-wagon to Bubbletown to bring Yassa to the city so he could have bionic eyes fitted by Dr Zilton Northgate, "the city's top optic surgeon." While he was in the Big Meg, Yassa was kidnapped by urban cannibals and rescued by Dredd. Despite this hitch in the proceedings, his new eyes were implanted successfully. Psi-Judge Anderson, probably the world's leading authority on all matters Dark Judge-related, exorcised Yassa's demons — literally, as the Sisters of Death had left what Anderson called "a spook in residence" in the child's head.

Yassa was flown safely back to Bubbletown (despite another attempt on his life thwarted when Dr Northgate sacrificed himself to save his patient) feeling, by his own account, better than he ever had before. All in all, it was a happy ending for Yassa, his worried parents and everyone involved, apart from Dr Northgate.

Trivia[]

Death Aid was Garth Ennis' first Judge Dredd story and the final story (so far) in which Yassa Povey has appeared. He was given a rather abrupt send-off, as he was last seen being hastily bundled into an H-wagon in a hail of sniper fire.
