History[]
The Doctor first encountered the alien Voord (predictably, led at the time by Yartek, "leader of the alien Voord") on the planet Marinus while still in his first incarnation, though it was not clear whether they were one of that planet's native races or simply invaders; either way, he prevented them from gaining the keys to the Conscience computer there. He encountered them again one hundred years later on Kandalinga, where they had enslaved the local fishmen, and has since clashed with them a few more times. On one occasion, it was revealed that Marinus was actually the planet Mondas and that the Voord were destined to become the Cybermen, but it's possible that this account of their origins occured in a parallel universe or has been altered by changes to the timeline (another account theorised that they were created by the group known as Faction Paradox).
Eventually, the changes to history wrought by the Last Great Time War caused the Voord to evolve into a more powerful form, and when it appeared that the Time Lords might be returning years later, they hid themselves away in a pocket universe powered by the Conscience of Marinus in order to escape any possibility of the Time Lords reversing their fortuitous forced evolution. An older, insane version of the Doctor became their new leader and hatched a plot to use several of his former selves and a 'Continuity bomb' created by the Daleks to alter history and make the Voord the rulers of all. His earlier selves thwarted his plans, however, and regressed the Voord back along their own timeline, causing their unnatural evolution never to have happened.
Powers and abilities[]
Powers
The Voord have a telepathic hive mind created by their suits, which they can apparently join or leave at will, though they always remain connected to it.
Abilities
Able to influence the minds of others if they can bond them with Voord suits.
Weaknesses
Bit lame, to be honest...
Paraphernalia[]
Equipment
The Voord's suits are the source of all their power, and seem to be permanently bonded to their bodies when they are inducted into the group mind.
Notes[]
Originating in the 1964 televised Doctor Who story The Keys of Marinus, the Voord have since appeared in stories in comics, annuals, novels and on audio, some of which are apparently contradictory.
Trivia[]
By fan tradition, the Voord's original boss is almost always referred to as "Yartek, leader of the alien Voord." Use of the adjective is very important, apparently.
