History

Born in Victorian England, Victoria Waterfield was the daughter of Edward Waterfield, a scientist who apparently had little imagination when picking girls' names. Her mother, whom she strongly resembled, died when Victoria was still a child. Victoria grew up to be a kindhearted girl with a penchant for feeding wild birds and befriending random strangers, such as the giant mute Turkish wrestler Kemel, who became chivalrously devoted to Victoria after she gave him a pressed flower.

Because there is no universal law stating that nice things have to happen to nice people, Edward Waterfield's treacherous colleague Maxtible helped the alien Daleks to kidnap and imprison Victoria in order to coerce the hapless scientist into working for them. Maxtible then killed Kemel, who had tried to rescue Victoria, and her father was exterminated by the Daleks.

With nobody else in the world to look after her, the orphaned Victoria was effectively adopted by the time traveller known as the Doctor. He and his companion Jamie McCrimmon, who had a bit of a teenage crush on Victoria, took the initially somewhat nervy (and later considerably nervier) girl on a terrifying odyssey through time and space. Having already been caught in the crossfire of a Dalek civil war on Skaro, she went on to encounter Cybermen, Yetis, Ice Warriors and a genocidal would-be dictator who was the Doctor's doppelgänger.

Understandably, Victoria eventually decided she'd had enough of "being scared out of my wits every second." She chose to end her TARDIS travels on the basis that "every time we go anywhere something awful happens," and remained in 20th century England with a nice couple called Mr and Mrs Harris, after her horrified screams had destroyed a monstrous seaweed creature.
