History[]
The man known only as 'V' was an inmate at the Larkhill Resettlement Camp, a brutal concentration camp in a dystopian future Britain ruled by a facist government known as Norsefire. Subjected to horrific medical experiments, "the man in room five" (V) was the only survivor of the experimental project which involved injecting prisoners with artificially designed hormones. V was altered in ways his captors had not envisaged, made stronger and faster but his mind supposedly warped, though his intellect was apparently greatly expanded. Eventually trusted to grow roses for the camp Commandant, the man in room five secretly stockpiled fertilizer which he used to make explosives: on November 5th, he burned down the camp and escaped, though he himself was severely burned and disfigured in the process.
Four years later, the man now known as V resurfaced, dedicated to a new cause: anarchy in the UK. From his hidden home, the Shadow Gallery (an underground haven packed with antiques and artifacts forbidden by Norsefire) he began a campaign of terrorist attacks which, over the course of a year, destabilized the government to the point where the citizenry revolted and overthrew their rulers and their feared secret police, the Fingermen. Along the way, he also tracked down and executed everyone who had worked at Larkhill.V himself, though, was shot and mortally wounded in a confrontation with the conflicted Inspector Finch and, just barely making it home, died in the arms of his friend and confidant Evey Hammond. Evey placed V's body in an Underground train bedecked with lilies and packed with explosives, and sent him on his final journey-a journey which ended with the destruction of 10 Downing Street, V's final triumph.

V's face was never seen and his true name never revealed. He wore a Guy Fawkes mask at all times, and dressed in the manner of the original Gunpowder Plot members.
Trivia[]
V for Vendetta was originally serialised in black and white in Warrior magazine but was left uncompleted when the title folded. Several years later, America's DC Comics reprinted the existing episodes in colour and gave Moore and Lloyd the opportunity to complete the story in a ten issue limited series.
