History[]
The hapless Tommy Hoff is a character from the 2000 AD strip The V.C.s (the new series written by Dan Abnett). In 2583 AD he joined the V.C.s straight out of training, having never actually seen combat before. The rest of the team (Major Smith, Kali and Ryx) treated him with derision and contempt. The only people who would socialise with him were Tycho, who was also new to the V.C.s (although she was a combat veteran), and Keege. However, Hoff found it difficult to bond with Keege because he was a Geek and "we trained so hard to kill things that look like him." He seemed to spend most of his free time drafting plaintive letters to his parents and then deciding not to send them because they sounded too desperate.
When Hoff joined the V.C.s their mission was to seek an alliance with anti-war Geek factions, known as 'apologists', while also fighting off the pro-war Geeks or 'loyalists'. This was so the humans and the Geeks could form an alliance and fight the alien collective called the Polity, who had secretly caused the human-Geek war in the first place. Hoff did his bit by vaping some Geek loyalists from his ship's starboard turret, once he finally got it to work. (Ryx later revealed that he knew that the starboard turret was slow, which was why he himself had switched to the main one.) Once they'd made planetfall on the Geek colony below Hoff also used a 'holey moley' (explosive device) to destroy a loyalist ship... but only when Tycho egged him on. The V.C.s' next mission was on 211 Spica Prax, where Hoff nearly shot Gaek'rr, the Geek pacifist they had come to make contact with (he did apologise to Gaek'rr later). This may have been because he was distracted by the ruins of ancient civilisations that littered the planet, and thinking about how much mankind could learn from them. On the bright side, the V.C.s succeeded in bringing Gaek'rr to a vitally important apologist conference, so maybe peace was finally declared between humans and Geeks and Hoff got the chance to become an archaeologist instead. And he did try to go one-on-one with a huge alien mercenary who had just killed Keege (who was pretending to be Gaek'rr at the time, acting as a decoy), which proves that he could be brave in extremis.

The V.C.s' nicknames for Hoff included "worm" (because he was from Earth), "F.N.G." (fricking new guy), "cherry shavehead" and "B.B.F." (body bag filler).
