History[]

Thrud is a barbarian (hence the name "Thrud the Barbarian", which wouldn't make much sense otherwise). He has the strength of a rhinoceros, the speed of a jungle cat, and the intelligence of a garden snail. As a baby, Thrud was found in a deserted village by a group of mercenaries looking for a pub. They decided to raise him as their own, teaching him to fight and drink beer. At the age of five, he was sent to the Crom the Destroyer Orthodox Pagans Infants School, but he was expelled after killing or maiming twenty seven pupils and three teachers after being shot with a pea shooter. Going to live in the wilderness, he found an ancient burial chamber containing a small helmet and a large axe. Arming himself with these and taking a fortune in gold and gems for good measure, he returned to civilization and embarked on a new life as a warrior. Eventually, he became a king, but found the job extremely boring.

Notes[]

Thrud was created when Carl Critchlow was eighteen years old, and first appeared in a fanzine. He went on to become a regular feature in games magazine White Dwarf between September 1983 and September 1988, and got his own solo comic, Carborundum Capers, in 2002. Four more, Ice'n' a Slice, Lava Louts, Thrud Rex and Bungle in the Jungle, followed in 2005, 2004, 2005 and 2007.

Trivia[]

  • Thrud is an obvious spoof of Conan.
  • Thrud's supporting cast include Lymara, the She Wildebeeste (a warrior woman with enormous breasts), Croneman the Cimpletan (also known as Amoron the Wombat, an Arnold Schwarzenegger lookalike with a ridiculous accent) and To-Me Ku-Pa (an evil magician: try saying the name aloud).
