History[]
The 'War Doctor' (not a name he ever applied to himself) was an incarnation of the Time Lord known as The Doctor who came into being specifically in order to fight in the last great Time War. He attempted to end the war by destroying both the Daleks and his own homeworld of Gallifrey and its entire population for the greater good of the universe, but was given an alternative solution by two of his future selves. The War Doctor, however, lost his memory of having found a better way, as a result of which, when he regenerated, his next incarnation believed he had committed this ultimate atrocity. The Doctor then refused to admit even to the War Doctor's existence for some time (until his full memory returned), declaring that this incarnation was the one who had "broken the promise" implicit in the title 'Doctor'.
