First appearance

TV Comic #784 (1966)

History[]

The second incarnation of The Doctor travelled for a time with his grandchildren John and Gillian before setting them down on the planet Zebadee and forming a long-standing partnership with Jamie McCrimmon (and slightly less long-standing partnerships with others such as Ben and Polly, Victoria Waterfield and Zoe Heriot) while battling menaces such as the Cybermen, the Daleks and the Quarks. Exiled to Earth by the Time Lords, he operated for a time out of an hotel before they forcibly altered his appearance as the second part of his punishment for disobeying their rules about not interfering in the affairs of other races.

Powers and abilities[]

Abilities

Be warned: if given the slightest excuse, he will play the recorder.

Strength level

Reasonably fit middle-aged Gallifreyan male.

Weaknesses

Disturbing tendency to exclaim "Oh my giddy aunt!" in moments of crisis. Also, easily impersonated by a short Mexican dictator.

Paraphernalia[]

Equipment

Sonic screwdriver; recorder (a wind instrument); fur coat; bag of sherbet lemons.

Transportation

TARDIS time capsule.

Notes[]

Most of the second Doctor's comic strip exploits took place in TV Comic or three editions of the Doctor Who Annual, and made no real attempt to follow his television continuity. He has, however, occasionally turned up in Doctor Who Magazine and various other publications which have attempted a greater degree of consistency with his TV incarnation.

Trivia[]

A lengthy break between the end of the second Doctor's era and the beginning of his successor's on TV resulted in TV Comic creating an elaborate backstory in which the second Doctor began his exile on Earth without changing his appearance before being forcibly regenerated by the Time Lords some months later. This was done simply because the magazine had no idea what the new Doctor would look like and therefore had to keep the previous one around until Jon Pertwee's television début.
