History[]
The Master is a renegade Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey, whose hobbies include cackling insanely, dressing up, and trying to conquer the universe. He has also, on occasion, dabbled in politics (briefly becoming Prime Minister of the United Kingdom) and religion (as the temporary vicar of the village of Devil's End) as well as inadvertently saving all creation from time to time, usually against his own better judgement. He is a former childhood friend of The Doctor, though their very different life choices since have left their relationship somewhat strained.

Notes[]
- The Master's first appearance in comics was technically in Doctor Who Fights Masterplan Q, a fifteen-part illustrated serial given away free on the wrappers of Nestlé chocolate bars in 1971, but this just sounds silly so we're going with his first appearance in the Doctor Who Annual instead.
- The original version of the Master (played on TV by Roger Delgado) also appeared in the Doctor Who strips in Countdown/TV Action and the Doctor Who Holiday Special 1973 as well as the Doctor Who Annual 1974.
- His later 1980s incarnation, portrayed on TV by Anthony Ainley, later appeared in the Doctor Who Annuals for 1983 to 1986.
- Various versions of the character have shown up in several issues of Doctor Who Magazine, the Doctor Who Winter Special Vol 2 7, and the Radio Times Doctor Who 20th Anniversary Special.
- In January 2020, he starred in Doctor Who Magazine-Past Masters: Classic Comic Strips Vol 1, a free supplement given away with the WH Smiths exclusive edition of Doctor Who Magazine Vol 1 547.
Trivia[]
Some of the Master's comic strip appearances have borne little resemblance to his TV incarnations, simply because publishers either hadn't managed to or didn't want to gain permission to use the likenesses of Delgado or Ainley.
