The Iron Legion was a Doctor Who comic strip by Pat Mills and Dave Gibbons which ran in the first eight issues of Marvel UK's Doctor Who Weekly from 17th October to 5th December 1979.
The plot[]
The Doctor arrives on an alternate Earth where, thanks to the interference of the demonic alien Malevilus, the Roman Empire has conquered the world with its robot Legionnaires (under the control of General Ironicus) and continued into the 20th century. The Doctor recruits cyborg slave Morris and ancient robot Vesuvius to help him overthrow the creatures, along the way almost being eaten by the alien known as The Ectoslime. John Wagner was co-credited as writer, but the bulk of the writing on this story was by Pat Mills.
Reprints[]
The story was reprinted in full in the 1980 Doctor Who Summer Special, reprinted again (in colour!) in the American title Marvel Premiere (issues #57-58) and the 1986 Summer Special, and has more recently been reprinted by Panini in 2004 in a graphic novel collection.
Apparently, the story was originally written as a script for the Doctor Who TV series, but was rejected. Nonetheless, it remains one of the best remembered and most highly regarded Doctor Who comic stories.
