Four faces

By Brian Delaney

The Four Faces of Eve, by Malcolm Shaw and Brian Delaney, was a serial which ran in Misty #20 - #31. Its heroine, Eve Marshall, awakens with apparent amnesia in a secure hospital, to which her 'parents' supposedly admitted her after she survived a fire that destroyed their home and left her covered in scars. Eve's putative father is a surgeon, who seems to have significant clout at the hospital, but neither he nor his wife appear to have any real affection for the girl, who is constantly troubled by nightmares about a fair-haired girl who died in a plane crash.

Gradually Eve, who is befriended by a girl named Carol Lombard from a travelling circus, begins to uncover the terrible truth about herself: the Marshalls are not her parents, and she herself is not one girl but four, a composite creature created by Marshall from the corpses of three dead teenagers: Margaret Hawthorne, Lucy Bartram and Amy Downley. Helped by Carol, Eve flees from the Marshalls, who intend to erase her memory in order to hide the evidence of their crime, and narrowly escapes being killed by them when she is recaptured. Surviving and escaping a car crash which leaves Marshall a broken man, Eve is taken in by the Lombards...

British girls' comics have a well deserved reputation for being weird. This story, however, takes "weird" to a whole new level.

The story was reprinted in Misty (Collected Edition) Vol 1 1.
