2000 AD prog 1553 cover

"LIFE ON THE INSIDE JUST GOT TOUGHER!

Longbarrow Maximum Security prison has been many things over the centuries – a Roman fort, a Victorian asylum, and now the site of a gateway to another world.

David Sorrell has been imprisoned for the murder of his wife and her lover, sentenced to twenty years in one of the country’s most forbidding jails. But when a strange infection starts warping the inmates into hideous creatures, life behind bars suddenly becomes a desperate struggle for survival!"

Stone Island was a strip by Ian Edginton and Simon Davis published in 2000 AD progs 1500 to 1507 (series one), and progs 1550 to 1559 (series two, The Harrowers). Pictured is the cover Davis created for prog 1553. The story has been collected in a trade paperback available here.

Edginton wrote the strip because "I'd been looking for an excuse to do a survivalist horror on speed story for a while. In these sorts of stories everyone's trying to get away from the bad guys, but what if you can't? What if you're locked in a maximum-security prison with loads of other bad guys?" (Thrill-Power Overload by David Bishop.)
