Jessica Drew was dying of radiation poisoning as a child but was saved by the High Evolutionary, who induced a mutation in her system using spider genes. As a result, she gained super powers, but eventually fell under the sway of the terrorist organisation Hydra. Freeing herself from them, she began a new life as both a private detective and the superhero Spider-Woman.
