History[]

Sir Evric the sinischal is a character from the 2000 AD strip Nemesis the Warlock. He was the leader of the bigoted human Terminators who were besieging the Basilisks (peaceful, tree-dwelling aliens) on the planet Demotika, with the aim of wiping them out.

Evric's lot was not a happy one. He had been forced to finance the entire siege with his own money, his deputy Brother Hieronymus was incompetent, his son Sir Balin had doubts about the morality of slaughtering aliens, his battle robot Mek-Quake kept accidentally killing his own men, and he had a fever that not even the administrations of a battle-maiden equipped with a bottle of boiled roc's venom could assuage. Torquemada was pressuring him for a quick end to the siege, but then the arch-deviant Nemesis appeared and reinforced the Basilisks.

Using a spell from an ancient grimoire, Nemesis caused a mighty wind to arise and blow up a dust storm which confused the siege engines so much that they started fighting each other. The Terminators' prize robot, the Torquearmada, was set alight by Fire-Raiser and blew up. Brother Hieronymus threatened to place the blame on Sir Evric in his report to Torquemada.

At his wits' end, Sir Evric was visited in the middle of the night by Nemesis, who promised to grant him three wishes in return for lifting the siege: to have lots of gold, to be brave enough to stand up to Torquemada, and to be young and handsome again. The third wish would be granted once his forces had left the planet. Sir Evric was desperate enough to agree to this deal, and the very next morning he ordered all his Terminators to pack up and return to Termight.

By the time he was back on Termight, Sir Evric had been made young and handsome again, but according to Nemesis' standards — and Nemesis thought that "the most handsome creature in the galaxy" was the young male Catoblepas. This meant that Evric now looked a bit like a huge warthog that had been involved in an unfortunate teleportation accident involving a human and a baboon, only worse. On the bright side, Evric enjoyed using his gift of bravery to shower Torquemada with insults.

The transmogrified Evric was put in a motor-pillory so he could be paraded through the tunnels of Termight as an awful warning before his eventual hideous death. Presumably he passed the time by shouting extremely rude things at the watching citizens as he was trundled along.
