History[]
John Benton was a corporal in the British army who started his career as a private in the rifle brigade of the 17th & 21st Lancers. Some time before the Cybermen invaded London in 1968, he was recruited by U.N.I.T. During his career with them defending the world from alien threats he was promoted to sergeant, and then to warrant officer holding the post of regimental sergeant major.
Benton was for a long time the loyal right-hand man of Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart and a trusted ally of The Doctor. According to one, possibly erroneous account, he left the Army in 1976 and ended up selling used cars. Given the nature of U.N.I.T., this may be a cover story. Let's just hope he didn't end up in Torchwood...
