History[]

Rok is a character from the 2000 AD strip Dan Dare. He was a canine-like alien who encountered Dan Dare shortly after he was grounded by Space Control. Rok offered him a job on the ship he was working on, captained by a man called O'Grady. Dare graciously accepted the job, only to be horrified to learn that the captain was a lazy idiot.

Rok, however, proved to be a valuable ally to Dare, despite his rather antisocial habit of satiating his large appetite by eating raw meat without the aid of cutlery and tossing the bones to the floor. He helped him to fight against the Skash (belligerent slug-like aliens) when captured by the Mekon (Dare's arch-enemy) and The Two of Verath. After O'Grady was killed, Rok helped Dare to defeat his old foe and trap the Mekon and the Two of Verath in a floating bubble, leaving them stranded in space. Dare and Rok later coincidentally ended up working on another job together, flying a Gemini Mark 6 ("the most advanced fighting ship in the galaxy") and apprehending the dastardly space pirate Buck Taggart. That was Rok's last appearance, and the strip ended on a cliffhanger, with readers not told whether or not Dare let Rok carry out an ancient custom of his tribe by eating Taggart.
