History
Melody Pond was the daughter of Amy Pond and her husband Rory Williams, conceived in the TARDIS while travelling in the time vortex and consequently born with some of the attributes of the Time Lords of Gallifrey. Stolen as a baby by the Silence, she was taken to an orphanage in America in the 1960s and brainwashed to assassinate the Time Lord known as The Doctor. Escaping, she regenerated, travelled to the UK and grew up as 'Mels', alongside her parents, who did not suspect her true identity. Eventually meeting the Doctor, she fell in love with him but still obeyed her programming and apparently killed him, something which proved to be a deception on the Doctor's part but which still resulted in River Song (as she was now known) being incarcerated in the Stormcage facility. She still routinely escaped to assist the Doctor (whose timeline was effectively travelling in the opposite direction to hers, meaning that they kept meeting in the wrong order) in his adventures, and to have adventures of her own, until she eventually perished on the world known as The Library. Unable to prevent her death, the Doctor nonetheless saved something of her by uploading a copy of her consciousness to the Library's computer, where she lived on in a virtual reality, which she was also seemingly able to project herself outside of via a mental link with the Doctor's companion Clara Oswald.
For some reason, some people seem to find this all a bit confusing. Can't think why.

Notes
River was played in the Doctor Who TV series by Alex Kingston.
Trivia
There are notable similarities between River and another companion of the Doctor, archaeologist Bernice Summerfield. The two characters have met in several Big Finish audios.
