History[]

The pilot of the V.C.s or 'vacuum cleaners', a squad of star-troopers committed to defending the solar system from the alien Geeks, was given his nickname because he was born on an outpost orbiting the ringed gas giant Saturn. Ringer was a surly and aggressive man with a penchant for casual racism: he called the rookie Steve Smith 'Earthworm' because he was born on Earth, and referred to his Chinese comrade Hen-Sho as having a "slanted mouth." When the Geeks wiped out the Earth conurbation of Transatlantic City, resulting in the deaths of twenty million people (including Smith's family), Ringer's response was: "That's a helluva lotta worms cut up!"

One could be forgiven for concluding that Ringer was a sociopath who only joined the war against the Geeks because he wanted to be able to legally kill people with top-grade weaponry. Jupe, the squad's sergeant, had his work cut out keeping him in line. Luckily for him, Jupe seemed to be the only person in the galaxy for whom Ringer had some respect — maybe even a modicum of affection. When Jupe was blinded on an expedition that was Smith's idea, Ringer retaliated by trying to kill Smith, then secretly cutting Smith's palm with a razor when Jupe made them shake hands.

Ringer's next mission was to disguise himself as a Geek and infiltrate a Geek planet with Smith. He was unmasked and tortured, all the while screaming for Smith to rescue him. Smith did eventually rescue Ringer, but only after transmitting the Geeks' location to his fleet and taking a Geek general hostage. By the time he retrieved Ringer, the captive V.C. had been tortured so much that it had driven him insane.

When a member of the diplomatic corps called the Dishwasher was going to kill Smith, as Smith knew that he had been collaborating with the Geeks, Ringer stepped between them and told the Dishwasher, "Nobody touches the worm but me!" He decapitated the Dishwasher with a kill-disc, but not before the turncoat had fatally shot him. Ringer ended up dying in Smith's arms, with a smile on his face. His ghost later helped encourage Smith to wipe out the Geeks' high command and end the war.

New series

Ringer was one of the dead V.C.s who haunted Steve Smith to keep him company. His ghost also aided Smith in resisting the interrogation of Geeks who had captured him and wanted him to tell them where he had concealed information on their deadly new weapon. Post-mortem Ringer was still a jerk, but a helpful one.
