Defiant from the start

By Mike McMahon

Peter Harris is a comics writer who work includes:

The first ever Dredd story helped establish many important elements of Dredd's world, including the post of Chief Judge (although it was called 'Grand Judge' in that story); a city divided into 'sections' (later 'sectors') and full of miles-high buildings that dwarfed the twentieth-century skyscrapers; Judges' name badges; Lawmasters (the Judges' computer-controlled bikes); and Dredd's strong independent, can-do streak. However, in that story Dredd's city was described as "New York 2099 AD." Later episodes revealed that New York was just part of the super-conurbation Mega-City One, which covered the east coast of what used to be the USA.
