History[]
Patchman, the protagonist of Master of the Marsh, was a mysterious hermit who lived in the fens of East Anglia with his dog, Leofric (with whom he appeared to have some form of telepathic connection). The oversized, rags-wearing wildman unexpectedly ended up as assistant sports master at Marshside Secondary School, where he displayed a talent for taming the unruly pupils despite making enemies amongst both them and the less salubrious members of staff. Patchman was eventually revealed to be the guardian of certain artifacts secreted in the area by Hereward the Wake in the 11th century, and Patchman himself tended to speak as though he belonged to that time, referring to "My Lord Hereward" on occasion.
