Outlier

By Karl Richardson

Outlier is a comic strip by T.C. Eglington and Karl Richardson. The first series was published in 2000 AD progs 1874 to 1883, and the second series in progs 1935 to 1944. The third and final series was published in progs 1990 to 1999. The subject of the strip, which is set in the far future, is the rivalry between humanity and an alien species called the Hurde. Although human civilisation now has access to impressive technology such as spaceships capable of interstellar travel, the Hurde are even more advanced than they are. In fact, the Hurde can convert their opponents into human/Hurde hybrids with dark blue skin, glowing green eyes and superhuman abilities. Unfortunately, the human military are set in their ways and don't see this transformation as the upgrade it obviously is.

According to Eglington, "What I like most about the series is the chance to explore a dark sci-fi universe. Science fiction is naturally optimistic, as it presupposes our survival in the future, so mixing it with darker themes creates a satisfying contrast. The art's been fantastic, Karl's really developed a unique look for the Outlier universe; I loved his big action sequences and his tech designs ... The first series was an unconventional take on a revenge story, the second was a twist on a prison-break story, and the final one was my version of a war story." The strip was partly reprinted in January 2018 in Outlier Vol 1, given away free with Judge Dredd Megazine #392.
