History[]
SAS officer Nick Stone, the protagonist of the 2000 AD strip Meltdown Man, was blasted into a possible future world by a nuclear explosion which should have killed him but somehow opened a temporal rift instead. There, he found himself in a nightmare world where decadent humans kept genetically engineered, humanoid animals called Yujees as slaves.
Pitting himself against the corrupt regime and its leader, Leeshar, Stone allied himself with cat-girl Liana, wolf-man Gruff and bull-man T-Bone to lead a Yujee revolution. On the quest for Yujee freedom he met the brigand Pole-Axe, the tracker Billy the Pup, psychic cobra King Seth, Louis the Lionman and Leeshar's deputy, the Tiger Commander.
Stone eventually defeated Leeshar by programming a cruise missile armed with a nuclear warhead to strike Leeshar's capital city of Sutermunda. (The missile was a relic left over from Earth's past.) The nuclear explosion killed all of Leeshar's Super-Predators and blasted Stone and Leeshar back to twentieth-century Earth: to be precise, the New Jersey turnpike, sixty miles away from New York.
Leeshar immediately faded from existence. Stone realised that the future he had just spent months in might never come to pass. "The Earth was struck by an asteroid which changed the future, but what if the asteroid was deflected? What if my story is believed and humanity is prepared for its coming? Then the future would change, and Leeshar would never have existed. Nor would Gruff, Liana, or T-Bone. You'll never know for sure, Stone... except that they'll always live on in your memory!"
