History[]
Reed Richards was a scientific genius who, being American, could not bear to let the Russians beat him to space. For reasons best known to himself, he therefore built a rocket using government funds, then hijacked it and took it on an unauthorised test flight using his girlfriend Sue, her kid brother Johnny and his best mate Ben Grimm as a crew. This act of criminal stupidity, coupled with the fact that Reed had for some reason neglected to give the rocket proper radiation shielding caused the four to become irradiated and spontaneously develop super powers, which Reed decided they should use to become superheroes. The fact that they all went along with this, and that the US government tolerated it, too, instead of jailing the lot of them, remains the most baffling part of the whole thing.
