History[]

Morton Judd is a character from the 2000 AD strip Judge Dredd. He was one of the very first members of the Council of Five when Mega-City One's famous legal system was still in its infancy, alongside the system's founder, Chief Judge Fargo. As head of genetics, Judd was responsible for cloning Dredd and his brother Rico from Fargo's DNA, gaining permission from one of Fargo's successors, Chief Judge Goodman. He also gave them their names, which were "designed to instil fear in the populace."

Drunk with power, Judd wanted to alter the DNA of the city's population so that the Judges would rule over a city of obedient clones. Judge Silver and others supported him, but Fargo exercised his veto on the grounds that "our job is to police the citizens we have — not create the citizens we would like." Judd tried to assassinate Fargo, failed, and escaped with his supporters before he could be publicly executed for his treachery.

Judd and his fellow renegades built a secret base underneath Uluru (formerly known as Ayers Rock, in Australia). They used stolen Justice Department DNA samples to create a 'lost tribe' of Judges which Judd named after himself. These 'Judda' included Judge Kraken, who, like Dredd, was cloned from Fargo's DNA. Judd's cronies all ended up being killed for having "incorrect attitudes" until there was only Judd left, ruling over a fanatically loyal clone army who worshipped him as a god and had been indoctrinated with a quasi-Biblical narrative about how Judd was the rightful ruler of Mega-City One.

When Judd's chthonic cult started using teleporters to infiltrate the city, Dredd travelled to Australia (on the pretext of pursuing iso-cube escapee Marlon Shakespeare) and destroyed Uluru with a nuke. Judd's last words, shown in a magnificent painted double-page spread by Will Simpson, were: "CURSE FARGO AND HIS SPAWN!"

Judge Kraken escaped the annihilation of the Judda. He was taken to Mega-City One and reindoctrinated in the hope that he would become an asset to the city, but he ended up helping the Dark Judges to kill sixty million citizens. Morton Judd's dying curse had been fulfilled.
