History[]
Maximan was a character from the 2000 AD strip Zenith. During the second World War he was a soldier named William Whitlock, transformed into the superhero Maximan by his own government. To do this they used secret technology provided by defecting Nazi scientists, which unbeknown to Maximan or the British had actually been developed by the demonic extra-dimensional entities known as the Lloigor.
Whitlock spent much of the war battling the Nazis and became a national hero, but he was finally defeated by his Nazi counterpart Masterman, who almost beat him to death before both were apparently killed by an atomic bomb detonated over Berlin in 1944. A twin of Masterman survived, spending the next few decades in suspended animation until he was revived by the Cult of the Black Sun in 1987.
An alternate universe version of Maximan, blinded (by his own hand, it later transpired) and driven mad by twenty years of isolation, later betrayed the alliance of heroes (including Zenith and Robot Archie) to the Lloigor, almost destroying the multiverse.
