History[]

Sgt. Matt Braddock was an RAF bomber pilot active throughout World War II, usually (though not exclusively) flying Lancasters, accompanied by his navigator, George Bourne (who narrated his adventures). A no-nonsense type who had little time for petty rules and regulations and repeatedly refused promotion, Braddock frequently clashed with his superior officers. Despite (or perhaps because of) this, he was extremely highly regarded. Other members of Braddock's flight crew at various times included co-pilot 'Ham' Hancox, Tom Tanner, 'Nicker' Brown, 'Hoppy' Robinson, 'Baa' Lamb, Les Howe and Arthur Atkins.

Braddock began his career in story paper The Rover in 1952 in illustrated text stories, but later moved into comic strip form in the pages of Victor (1961-83) and Warlord (1974), as well as Wizard. Several of his stories were published in book form as I Flew With Braddock. In 2019, he was revived in the pages of Commando after an absence of several decades.
