Synopsis for "At the Sign of the Lion"[]
Wolverine is lone and brooding, sitting in a bar (the first of many bar tropes) agonizing over his love for Jean Grey and his dislike for Cyclops. The internal conflict is disrupted when Hercules, the Greek demigod, enters the establishment and begins provoking and bullying Wolverine. This leads to a fierce and chaotic bar fight between the two characters. The story emphasizes Wolverine's independence and combative nature, highlighting his ability to stand his ground against powerful opponents. It is considered Wolverine’s first solo story where he appears as the main character outside of the X-Men. This story also includes the first inking work of the legendary George Perez.
Notes[]
This story features a six page original Wolverine vs. Hercules story which will later be reprinted both in X-Men Pocketbook #20 and in a US Treasury Edition in 1980. It also features a five page solo feature starring the X-Men's Angel which is reprinted in the same Treasury Edition.
