History[]

Loon was the starboard gunner of the V.C.s or 'vacuum cleaners', a team of space commandos attempting to rid the solar system of the hostile alien Geeks. Unfortunately, six years of garrison detail on Earth's moon as a punishment for disorderly conduct had left him somewhat out of touch with reality, and with a tendency to go on homicidal rampages at regular intervals. After one such rampage his sergeant, Jupe, was on the point of expelling him from the squad. However, new recruit Steve Smith realised that they needed Loon to communicate with the ship's computer, Brother, which had also become insane and had adopted a pacifist, 'hippy' persona. Loon dressed up as a hippy and persuaded the computer that war is really where it's at, man, and all the cool cats are doing it, you dig me? (Men have to do strange things in times of war, and this was one of them.) Because Loon's charade had persuaded the computer to play ball, Jupe let Loon stay in the V.C.s.

Despite — or perhaps because of — his mental imbalance, Loon fought the Geeks valiantly alongside his comrades Smith, Hen-Sho, Ringer and Dwarf Star. He was one of the war's many casualties, vapourised by a Geek fighter on an alien moon despite Smith's best attempts to save him, but it's fair to say that he died doing what he loved.

Loon's ghost later encouraged a severely wounded Smith to wipe out the Geeks' high command and end the war. Even after death he still had an annoying laugh.

New series

Loon was one of the dead V.C.s who haunted Steve Smith to keep him company. His ghost also aided Smith in resisting the interrogation of Geeks who had captured him and wanted him to tell them where he had concealed information on their deadly new weapon.
