History[]
Kate Lethbridge-Stewart is the daughter of Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, and prefers to be known as Kate Stewart because she wants to get ahead on her own merits. As the head of scientific research at U.N.I.T., Kate occasionally needs the help of The Doctor and his companions when fighting extraterrestrial threats to the security of the United Kingdom. A determined, brave and proactive person, Kate will do whatever it takes to enlist the Doctor's help and to protect the realm. She has locked horns with the Great Intelligence, Zygons, Cybermen and the renegade Time Lord most commonly known as The Master.

U.N.I.T. has access to the most sophisticated technology known to twenty-first-century humanity, plus a few bits and pieces acquired from other species and time periods. Kate carries a hand-held scanner that can tell how many hearts somebody has, and she has been known to send messages to the Doctor's psychic paper.

Kate Lethbridge-Stewart first appeared in the direct-to-video Doctor Who spin-off Downtime and its sequel Daemos Rising, played on both occasions by Beverley Cressman. In the television series she is played by Jemma Redgrave, whose naturally dark hair is dyed blonde for the part.
