History[]

The original K9 was a mobile computer in the shape of a dog, created by Professor Marius of the Bi-Al Foundation. K9 was gifted to The Doctor, a wandering time traveller, and remained with him for some time before electing to remain on Gallifrey, the planet of the Time Lords with his companion Leela. The Doctor has since created at least three more outwardly identical (but in all probability increasingly more sophisticated) K9 units; the Mark II version was left in the custody of his other former companion Romana, while the Mark III version was created as a gift for yet another former companion, Sarah Jane Smith. Following K9 Mark II's destruction, the Doctor built Sarah a replacement with the memories of his predecessor, last seen in the company of Sarah's adoptive son, Luke Smith.

Notes[]

K9 was voiced in the TV series Doctor Who (and its various spin-offs) by first John Leeson, then David Brierley, and later Leeson again. His appearances in comics span several issues of Doctor Who Magazine and a number of editions of the Doctor Who Annual, amongst others, though his only solo outing (aside from in a back-up strip in Doctor Who Weekly Vol 1 12) was in the one and only K9 Annual in 1982.

Trivia[]

K9 has frequently been depicted as being much smaller in the comics than he was on screen, basically so that artists could show him being carried around by other characters and therefore appearing in close-up shots rather than always being at floor level and therefore necessitating long shots.
