History[]
Jake Flint was the principal character in the Starlord series Planet of the Damned. A tall, handsome man with a striking mane of red hair, he was the bosun of the Gallantine, a ship lost in the Bermuda Triangle in the early 1800s. Due to the strange time warp effect on the other-dimensional world accessed via the Triangle, Flint was still relatively youthful when he encountered and became the leader of a group of passengers of a plane which came through the time warp in 1978.
Flint led the passengers to Sanctuary, the only safe place on the Planet of the Damned. During the journey he was enormously patient with them despite their apparent lemming-like desire to die in a variety of interesting ways, such as dancing in acid rain, cuddling cute-but-deadly wildlife and eating fruit so delicious that it made you drown in its juice. However, no sooner had he got what remained of them to Sanctuary than its helpful plants were turned evil by a disgruntled nuclear physicist with an unexpected flair for botany. The ever-resourceful Flint helped the people of Sanctuary to flee down an underground river (the trick was to exit the river just before it emptied into a lake of acid).
Eventually, Flint and the surviving members of his band found their way back to Earth in the 1970s. What Flint made of this new world, and what it made of his favourite hobby of walking around shirtless and fighting people, is anybody's guess.
Flint's speech patterns varied: sometimes he sounded like a salty sea-dog, sometimes a medieval knight, and sometimes an inhabitant of the twentieth century (especially when something complicated had to be explained to the reader). His origins and motivation were never explored in depth, as he existed mainly to be brave and altruistic for plot purposes. After all, the plane crash survivors — people like business tycoon Lew Kerr and sci-fi writer Stan Hackmann — would never have made it on their own, so without Flint it would have been a much shorter strip.
