Interceptor

Cover by Richard Elson

Interceptor is a comic strip by Ian Edginton and Steve Pugh which was published in 2000 AD progs 1337 to 1345. Pictured is the cover Richard Elson created for prog 1343. The plot concerns a doctor called Lyra Darius, working in a future New York, who discovers that her boyfriend's body has been used to imprison an extraterrestrial criminal and is sucked into the world of alien law enforcement (a bit like Will Smith in Men in Black). One of the aliens she has to fight is trapped in the body of an elderly woman who is a dead ringer for Granny, the creation of newspaper cartoonist Giles. Dr Darius ends up shooting the alien criminal, Proteus, in the head. Her duplicitous boyfriend, a rich jerk who was in league with Proteus, is imprisoned.

Edginton says that "Interceptor was meant to be fun, sexy science-fiction. The influence I took for it was The Fifth Element, bearing in mind Steve's wonderful design sensibility and the sumptuous way he draws ladies. The fact the heroine spends most of the story running around in a skimpy top and knickers was not purely by chance." (Thrill-Power Overload by David Bishop.)

A reprint of Interceptor (pictured) was published free with the Judge Dredd Megazine #360.
