Synopsis for "The Black Knight"[]
A former knife-thrower whose stage name was Le Sabre (although he was master of all ancient weapons, including the axe) is overcome with guilt about accidentally killing the woman he was working with. Mordred appears to him and threatens to haunt him for the rest of his days unless he does his bidding and kills the Black Knight. He gives him a winged gargoyle which comes to life and has the ability to fly so that Le Sabre can ride it around. Meanwhile, the Black Knight intuits that his ancestor, Percy of Scandia, has need of him. He goes for a ride on Aragorn, his winged horse, and is alarmed when Le Sabre swings an axe at him.
Notes[]
Published by Marvel UK in December 1979.
Trivia[]
- Purcell and Adkins don't show us a young woman being killed with a thrown knife, but Le Sabre's reaction to the unfortunate incident (hand clapped to forehead; anguished expression; exclamation of "Mon Dieu!") is rather amusing.
- Bringing gargoyles to life was an ability also possessed by the Black Baron, suggesting that he, too, may have been a pawn of Mordred and the Nether Gods.
