Heavy Metal is an American science fiction and fantasy comics magazine founded in April 1977 as a licensed outlet primarily translated European material, much of it originally published in the French magazine Metal Hurlant ("Howling Metal"). Known for its mix of fantasy, sci-fi and erotica, the magazine has showcased the work of hundreds of creators including Jean Giraud (Mœbius), Alfonso Azpiri and Milo Manara over the years, as well as Britain's own Simon Bisley, Harry North and Mike Dorey, amongst others (since 1979, it has also included more material by American creators). In 1981, an animated feature film based on several serials from the magazine was produced, which became something of a cult hit. Strips featured include Den and The Airtight Garage.
