Hans Schmitt was a young German soldier stationed on the Eastern Front during World War II, whose life became even more of a nightmare than it had been to start with when he discovered that the unit of Romanians he was fighting alongside were actually vampires. Even worse, they knew that he knew. Then, the Romanians changed sides...
Schmitt and his friend Karl Mueller eventually fought and destroyed most of the vampires, though Karl was ultimately killed, but their leader Captain Constanta managed to turn Hans into a vampire as punishment for defying him. Schmitt walled himself up in a cellar in Berlin, wrote the entire story up in his diary as a warning to whoever found him, then shot himself in the head with a silver bullet, ending his own undead existence.
