Big Dave pumps iron

Grant Morrison (born 31st January 1960) is a comics writer from Glasgow. They broke into the industry writing Gideon Stargrave for the short lived anthology Near Myths in 1978 before moving on to write Captain Clyde (an unemployed Glaswegian superhero) for the Govan Press newspaper as well as strips for D.C. Thomson's Starblazer. They wrote The Liberators for Dez Skinn's Warrior magazine in 1985, then a number of strips in titles such as Doctor Who Magazine (in which they killed off popular TV companion Jamie McCrimmon) and Spider-Man & Zoids in 1986, the same year in which they began working for 2000 AD.

Though they started out at 2000 AD writing Tharg's Future Shocks (along the way collaborating with artists such as John Hicklenton, and creating the character Ulysses Sweet), their big break came with the creation of Zenith with artist Steve Yeowell, a critically-acclaimed strip which brought Morrison to the attention of American publishers DC Comics. For DC, they reinvented the minor character Animal Man and turned him into a critical success, before moving on to take over Doom Patrol and write the award winning Batman graphic novel Arkham Asylum - a Serious House on Serious Earth in 1989.

Morrison has since enjoyed a long and varied career at both DC and its 'mature readers' imprint, Vertigo, writing characters including Kid Eternity, the Flash and - for a lengthy run - the Justice League of America, as well as the X-Men for Marvel and a number of projects including the controversial Big Dave for 2000 AD, Really & Truly (also for 2000 AD), a revamped Dan Dare for the short lived title Revolver and The New Adventures of Hitler for Crisis. They continue to write extensively for DC, and in 2006 was voted the second favourite comic book writer of all time by Comic Book Resources (Alan Moore was at number one). They have also been the editor of Heavy Metal.

On the 'secret of life', Morrison has this to offer: "The Universe is laughing hysterically and if you don't laugh along it appears to be laughing at you." (2000 AD prog 848.)
