History[]
Golgotha Joe is a character from the 2000 AD strip Bad Company. The original Golgotha Joe had been a member of 19th division, the unit that became Bad Company, but he went AWOL and hid in the Golgotha Plains on Ararat, where the air was full of a hallucinatory gas. Joe injected himself with Krool blood to try and protect himself from the gas, but it didn't work — or, possibly, worked extremely well. What happened was that he hallucinated duplicates of himself which became independent entities, capable of autonomous action and sentient thought.
Bad Company first met one of Golgotha Joe's imaginary friends when, ten years after Ararat exploded, they arrived in a run-down area of Earth called the 'Golgotha Ghetto'. This ghetto was full of a synthetic gaseous substance mimicking the effect of the hallucinatory chemical on Ararat. Joe was hiding there, sending his alter egos out to interact with people because he didn't trust strangers.
The version of Golgotha Joe encountered by Bad Company helped them to fend off hostile government forces. His head was blow open halfway through their conversation, but that didn't faze him — you can't hurt a fictional entity. Joe told them to travel to a Krool prison planet to discover the truth about humanity's war with the Krool. When they returned, Joe saved them from the government again and then went on the run with them, having achieved a life completely separate from that of his creator.
Joe was based on Brett Ewins, who co-created Bad Company (see quotes).
