History[]
Ghost is a character from the 2000 AD strip Ace Trucking Co.. He had the misfortune to be the ship's computer of Speedo Ghost, the flagship of the interstellar haulage company run by Ace Garp. On a good day, Ace was eccentric; on a bad day, he was suicidally idiotic. Nevertheless, Ghost had no choice but to go along with his owner's madcap schemes — not least because Ace, as the ship's pilot, could literally tell Ghost where to go if he disobeyed. The long-suffering Ghost tended to restrain himself to making acerbic comments from the sidelines. His trials were shared by the ship's 'biffo', G.B.H (Dead), and by its engineer, Feek the Freak. Fortunately, Feek was an engineering genius who, aided by his companion Chiefy Pig-Rat, did a lot to keep Ghost and his ship functional in the face of near-impossible odds. These included the memorable occasion when Ace decided to make Speedo Ghost accelerate by performing a sling-shot manoeuvre around a sun.
When Speedo Ghost was boarded by a crew of scurvy hijackers, Ghost fought valiantly against the intruders by deploying his cleaning robots against them and blasting them them with soapy water. He was only defeated when the hijackers inserted a physical device into his 'auto-banks' that overrode his programming. Speedo Ghost was eventually recovered and the override removed, leaving Ghost, for the first time in his life, glad to see Ace.
Ghost's cleaning robots or 'scrubbots' also came in handy when the crew of the Speedo Ghost boarded an abandoned ship, were deliberately driven insane by its sole occupant, and were encased by him in plasteen cubes. Realising that he was the only person who could save the day, Ghost sent his scrubbots to retrieve Ace from the clutches of his tormentor. He then created a cure for 'heeble', the drug that had made Ace go even crazier than usual.
