Gene Selfish is a character from the 2000 AD strip Counterfeit Girl. An I.D. simmer (someone who gives people new identities) who worked in the red-light district known as the Maze, he had a one-sided attraction to Libra Kelly, a rival simmer who worked in the same area. However, after being offered a lot of money to give Libra a personality infected with a deadly disease he succumbed to his avarice and poisoned the woman he allegedly loved, much to his later regret. Selfish then went to a recovery hostel for former I.D. simmers.
Libra eventually found Gene Selfish in his hostel room, only to be attacked by a woman who turned out to be the original Libra Kelly. Libra Mark I had created a counterfeit Libra who believed she was the real Libra because the evil Sir Albion Starflight (father of the original Libra's boyfriend, Slayd Starflight) wanted to kidnap the original Libra and brainwash her into being a perfect employee. The original Libra and Slayd left Selfish on his own as they went to deliver Libra Mark II to Sir Albion. By giving Sir Albion a fake Libra, the original Libra and Slayd hoped to be able to continue their clandestine love affair.
Once Libra and Slayd had left with Libra 2.0, Gene Selfish had a change of heart and called up a few merc buddies to help him rescue his love (the duplicate) from her captors. The rescue operation was a success. Selfish then helped fake Libra to swap personalities with the original Libra, which meant that original Libra ended up with the deadly infection. Original Libra was then dropped off outside Albion's tower, where she was cured of her illness before undergoing brain surgery to force her into compliance, just as Sir Albion had intended. Afterwards, Gene and the fake Libra parted company on friendly terms so that she could go and find out whom she had been before the original Libra had used her as a pawn.
