Real World Stuff[]

Forbidden Planet is the name of a chain of bookshops (or, to be more specific, two chains which grew out of a single store) in the United Kingdom, the USA and Ireland. The original Forbidden Planet (named after a 1956 Sci-Fi movie) was opened in 1978 by Titan Books bosses Nick Landau, Mike Luckman and Mike Lake (who were later immortalised in comics by Chris Claremont as the partners in intergalactic holding company Landau, Luckman & Lake in Marvel's X-Men and Wolverine titles) and was located at number 23 Denmark Street, just off London's Charing Cross Road. Following the closure of Dark They Were, and Golden Eyed in 1981, it became London's most popular comics outlet, and soon moved to larger premises. There are now two separate companies using the name, Forbidden Planet and Forbidden Planet International.

In Comics[]

Instantly recognisable to British comics fans of the time, the original store was the setting for an epic battle between Captain Britain and Slaymaster in Marvel UK's The Daredevils Vol 1 4, and was also visited by Torquemada in a photo-strip in 1987's 2000 AD Sci-Fi Special Vol 1 10. Marvel US's New Mutants Annual #2 featured the location, as well.
