Miracleman #10 (USA)

History[]

Avril Lear was kidnapped as a teenager by Dr. Emil Gargunza and transformed into a superhuman using the same stolen alien technology he and Project Zarathustra had earlier used to create the superhumans Miracleman, Kid Miracleman and Young Miracleman. Kept sedated by Gargunza while he raped her sleeping form, Lear's mind was implanted with memories of a totally fictitious career as the superheroine Miraclewoman until she was awakened by Gargunza to help track down another experimental subject gone rogue, Terrance Rebbeck (alias Young Nastyman). Discovering the truth about her origins, Lear supposedly died fighting Rebbeck inside a volcano, but actually escaped and went to ground, becoming Dr McCarthy.

Twenty years later, she sought out Miracleman and became his lover, assisting him in ushering in a new golden age on Earth after effectively overthrowing all human governments, and ending the cold war between the alien Warpsmiths and Qys along the way (by convincing them to have sex with each other). There was, however, always a devious and manipulative side to her nature.

Notes[]

Avril Lear was created by Alan Moore for the Marvelman series begun in Warrior magazine in 1982, and should logically have been called Marvelwoman. However, Warrior was cancelled before she could appear and consequently, she eventually debuted in the American-published Miracleman title which reprinted and continued the series (the character names having been changed in order to avoid possible legal action by Marvel Comics). Whether she will ever reappear (and under what name) now that Marvel own the rights to the characters is unknown.
