History[]
Evey Hammond grew up in Shooters Hill, London, under the reign of the fascist government called Norsefire in an alternate version of the 1990s. Orphaned at an early age (her mother died in a nuclear war in the 1980s, her father was executed by Norsefire for being a Socialist) Evey was raised in a hostel and set to work packing matches, and later making munitions. Once out on her own, desperate for money, she turned to prostitution but her first prospective clients turned out to be two of Norsefire's secret police, the Fingermen, who planned to rape and murder her. Rescued by the anarchist terrorist known only as V, Evey became his friend, confidant and eventually ally, living with him in his underground home, the Shadow Gallery. Along the way, however, V deliberately faked an abduction and made Evey think she had been imprisoned by Norsefire and was to be executed, subjecting her to months of physical and mental torture which, he eventually explained, was to take her to breaking point and beyond so that nothing would ever be able to frighten her again. Initially hating V for what he had done, Evey nonetheless returned to him and, when V was finally killed in the process of starting a revolution, Evey set his body on its final journey in an Underground train filled with lilies and packed with explosives-which detonated right under 10 Downing Street!
Evey subsequently took it upon herself to continue V's work.
Notes[]
It has been speculated that V was intended to be Evey's supposedly dead father, but series writer Alan Moore has confirmed this was not the case.
