Dudley Dexter Watkins (1907-1969) was an illustrator and cartoonist employed by DC Thomson, and was best known for The Broons and Oor Wullie (which he co-created with writer R.D Low) in The Sunday Post and for his work on numerous strips in Beano, Dandy, Topper and Beezer, including Desperate Dan, Lord Snooty, Ginger, Jimmy and His Magic Patch, Jack Flash, Percy Vere and His Trying Tricks, Wandering Willie the Wily Explorer and Mickey the Monkey. He also provided illustrations for Thomson's story papers, Adventure, Skipper, Rover, Wizard and Hotspur. He was one of only two of Thomson's artists who, due to his value to the company, was permitted to sign his work (the other was Allan Morley). Famously, due to his persistent mocking of Hitler and his chief subordinates in his strips, Watkins' name was apparently on a Nazi death list during World War II, which is actually rather impressive.
