When Van Volk introduces himself, the Doctor mentions having known both a Van Dyne ("though you needed a magnifying glass to see her") and a Von Doom, both references to Marvel Comics characters (the Wasp and Dr. Doom). The Rosette of Sirius is named for 2000 AD editor Tharg's forehead adornment, and the Pan Galactic Gargleblaster is a drink from The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy. If you remember The Onedin Line, you're getting old.
