History[]

Dr Christopher Thorn was an associate of Dr James Braddock. Following Braddock's death, Thorn was hypnotised by his creation, the Mastermind computer (still running in the basement of Braddock Manor), into becoming the illusion-casting supervillain Dr Synne.

Mastermind used Synne to attack Braddock's children, Brian (alias the superhero Captain Britain), Jamie and Betsy. Synne was directed to tap into Betsy's latent psychic powers and cause her to hallucinate that her brothers were evil monsters, which made her try to kill them with an axe from the drawing room wall. (There are many disadvantages to living in a stately home such as Braddock Manor — walls covered in medieval weapons within reach of any psychotic member of the aristocracy, and plenty of room for a secret evil computer in the cellar.)

Synne apparently knew that his powers came from the computer, but not that the computer was actually controlling his every move. He had some half-baked idea about 'ruling the world' (which proves he must have been insane — even ruling the USA drives most people up the wall), but before he could put it into action he wanted to kill Captain Britain. During his final battle with the hero, housekeeper Emma Collins, who was cleaning Braddock Manor's cellar, switched the Mastermind computer off so she wouldn't get an electric shock. The effort of sustaining his power without the computer's aid gave Doctor Synne a fatal heart attack. Just before he died, he thoughtfully told Captain Britain about the nature and location of the computer. Perhaps his reasoning was that if he himself couldn't rule the world, he was damned if a computer would have the fun of doing it instead.
