History[]
Doctor Claw is a character from Marvel UK's Captain Britain series. He was born Dafydd ap Rhys, a scientist hired by the British government to develop an insect repellent which, unbeknown to him, was actually a biochemical warfare agent. The fumes from the chemicals he was working with crippled and mutated Dafydd, giving him toughened skin, claw-like hands and birdlike feet. Dafydd was horrified by his new appearance and tormented by the idea that all those who saw him shuddered with disgust. He wanted vengeance on the public whom he thought despised him.
Dafydd, by now insane, renamed himself Doctor Claw and retired with his servant, Fong, to Eden Island, a tropical paradise which he populated with mutant monsters and filled with death traps such as quicksand. It isn't clear how he financed this operation. He may have sold his shrink ray technology to other super-villains, or he may have received a huge compensation pay-out from the British government. It also isn't clear how he came to be the de facto owner and ruler of an island which was already inhabited by 'natives'. Nevertheless, this somehow happened, and all the 'natives' ended up being shrunk to pixie-size, calling Claw "master," riding on flying insects (which was admittedly extremely cool) and acting as Claw's private army.
Doctor Claw set about luring people to his island to be hunted for sport by his creations, by mailing them free tickets for a 'tropical holiday'. He even managed to get a ticket to Captain Britain, despite the fact that the hero's true identity is secret so he has no postal address. This turned out to have been a fatally stupid thing to do: after clashing with Doctor Claw and his minions several times, the Captain left Doctor Claw stuck in the middle of an erupting volcano, at the mercy of his own enraged mutants.
