David Sutherland

David Sutherland O.B.E (born 1933, died January 2023) was a comics artist working for D.C. Thomson, best known for his work on characters and strips such as Dennis the Menace, the Bash Street Kids (pictured), Biffo the Bear, Billy the Cat, Dog's Tale, General Jumbo, Gnasher's Tale, Rasher, The Germs and Fred's Bed for the Beano and Korky the Cat and Jak for the Dandy. He also, early in his career, drew adventure strips including Danny on a Dolphin, Lester's Little Circus, The Great Flood of London, General Jumbo and Billy the Cat. In all, he drew the Bash St. Kids for over sixty years, Dennis for 28 years, and Biffo for seventeen. He was awarded the O.B.E for services to illustration in the 2023 New Years Honours list, just under three weeks before his death. Beano editor John Anderson described him as "the single most important illustrator in Beano history".
