History[]
Barry Kurten was a Judge in Mega-City One, whose best friend was a small blue demon called Mo which lived in his head, and occasionally came out and sat on his shoulder. Mo would tell Judge Kurten to dole out extra-harsh treatment to perps who 'deserved it' — a head smacked against a plascrete wall, a broken arm, perhaps the 'accidental' death of a creep for whom thirty years in an iso-cube didn't seem nearly enough... And, thanks to Mo's cunning, Judge Kurten got away with it.
Sadly for Judge Kurten, Mo was not, in fact, real, but a persistent delusion caused by a combination of a childhood trauma and his harsh Justice Department training. Kurten's excessive violence eventually came to the attention of Judge Dredd, who ordered him to undergo a special psychiatric assessment. Kurten passed the assessment by letting Mo take control of his brain temporarily, but Dredd's instinct told him that Kurten was a rotten Judge and he had him placed under surveillance. The cameras picked up Kurten assaulting a drug dealer, but before he could be arrested he stole ten million creds and escaped (with Mo) to Ciudad Barranquilla.
Kurten became a Judge in Ciudad Barranquilla's spectacularly corrupt Justice Department, and was so brutal that the citizens called him 'Diablo' or 'Devil'. A Mega-City One Psi-Judge had a psi-flash of his whereabouts, so Judge Hershey and Dredd travelled to Ciudad Barranquilla, under the cover of a diplomatic mission, to bring Kurten in. Kurten didn't want to undergo psychiatric treatment that might burn Mo out of his head, so he tried to kill Dredd, but ended up being killed by the very nerve gas he had intended to use on his pursuer. Mo died too.
