City of the Damned was a Doctor Who serial by writer John Wagner and artist Dave Gibbons which appeared in Marvel UK's Doctor Who Weekly #9 to #16 from 12th December 1979 to 30th January 1980. It has since been reprinted several times, though the American reprint in Marvel Premiere Vol 1 #59 to #60 was retitled City of the Cursed because of US censorship laws (thus neatly illustrating Wagner's point). Pat Mills was credited as co-writer, but in fact, he and Wagner were alternating on scripts at the time and this one was all Wagner's. The editor was Dez Skinn.

The plot[]

The Doctor arrives on the planet of Zom in the city of Zombus, where the Zombians have been reduced to... well... zombies! Emotion has been outlawed as being dangerous to order, and is surgically purged from the brains of the populace. The Doctor teams up with the inevitable band of freedom fighters, the Zom Emotional Peoples Organisation (led by Will-To-Live and including members Daft, Humble, Mournful, Nervous, Slightly Angry, Fairly Angry and Very Angry, each of whom have dedicated themselves to the preservation of a particular emotion) in order to overthrow the Moderator General, his army of Moderators, and the ruling genetically engineered Brains Trust. Ultimately, the people of Zom had their emotions returned to them and founded a new society based, rather unfortunately, on the Doctor.

Still, it could have been worse. It all depends which Doctor their society was based on. They could have all ended up wearing celery (with compulsory games of cricket for every citizen on Sundays), or snogging each other at the drop of a hat, or carrying multicoloured umbrellas, or just being terrifically grumpy all of the time.
