History[]
Chiefy Pig-Rat is a character from the 2000 AD strip Ace Trucking Co.. When Ace and his crew boarded the abandoned interstellar clipper Bloo Maru, Feek the Freak (the engineer) found Chiefy in the engine-room. Feek, who has a soft spot for all things odd, ugly or downright horrible, took a shine to the strange little creature and decided to keep him as a pet and occasional workmate.
One of Chiefy's most endearing characteristics (from Feek's point of view) is his sarcastic, irreverent demeanour, which mostly takes the form of insults directed at Feek's feckless captain, Ace Garp. You'd think that someone who looks like Chiefy Pig-Rat would be skating on very thin ice when mocking someone else's appearance, but that doesn't stop him from constantly making jibes about Ace's large ears and skinny build. He has even been known to try and pick a fight with him, although he is small enough to fit in the palm of Ace's hand.
The ever-resourceful Chiefy once helped G.B.H. (the company's 'biffo' or hired muscle) win a 'Battle of the Biffos' by running up his opponent's shorts. This may not have been strictly ethical but it definitely worked, and it allowed Ace to win back the deeds to his two lugs (which he had foolishly lost to his arch-enemy Jago Kane in an earlier bet). Thanks to Chiefy Pig-Rat's rodent cunning, Feek and his friends kept their jobs. Also, when Ace and his associates were trapped on the fanatically religious world of Kloistar, Chiefy's small size allowed him to slip past their guards and carry a message to Speedo Ghost that rescued them from their predicament.
